Speakeasy silent cinema jazz

Take a trip back to the 1920s for a hotsy-totsy evening when Night Owl Cinema and Baycourt presents ‘Speakeasy Silent Cinema' tomorrow night.

The one-off event will feature a screening of the 1928 film ‘Steamboat Bill Jr' starring Buster Keaton, with the soundtrack provided by Ron Clark playing Baycourt's amazing Wurlitzer organ.

Night Owl organiser Kimberley Cleland is excited to be bringing something a little bit different to Tauranga.

'A big part of us hosting winter events is to also celebrate Tauranga people and places like Baycourt,” says Kimberley.

'Wurlitzers were used as one-man orchestras to provide soundtracks for silent films, hence why we're doing a 1920s themed evening and showing a black-and-white film.”

Kimberley says they chose ‘Steamboat Bill Jr' as it's the perfect example of the physical comedy style which Keaton was famous for.

'Keaton throws himself around and does all kinds of things with his body, it's pretty amazing and almost like watching a cartoon. The film's score also suits the Wurlitzer perfectly.”

For the event Baycourt will be transformed into a ‘speakeasy bar' which were popular during the 1920s prohibition era.

Night Owl is also encouraging everyone to dress up in their best 1920s garb and there'll be prizes for the best dressed guy and gal on the night.

'We're really excited because it'll be something a little bit different and a truly unique experience for Tauranga.”

Night Owl Cinema and Baycourt Community and Arts Centre's Speakeasy Silent Cinema is tomorrow, June 20, from 7pm. Tickets cost $20-$29 from www.ticketek.co.nz
