Thirteen Bay of Plenty schools took to the stage for the annual competition highlighting two nights of youth creativity and expression on June 11-12.

Tauranga Girls' College won first place with their performance ‘Blossoming from Destruction' in the Open Division at Baycourt Theatre on Friday.

Their winning performance told the story of the February 2011 earthquake and the devastating loss of life that tore the fabric of New Zealand society apart.

Event manager Sarah-Jane Phillips says TGC had a very strong performance that was very emotional and moving.

'Fantastic use of lighting added fear and power into their performance.”

Design judge Daniel Pepperell says it was a strong performance. 'I was glued to the stage the entire time. It was a very emotional piece.”

Meanwhile, Otumoetai College Team 2 took out first place in the RAW Division on Thursday night, with their performance ‘Behind Closed Doors Pick a Path'.

Otumoetai College Team 2 won the RAW Division at the 2015 Stage Challenge.

Their winning performance focussed on the difference between what the public thinks and sees – and the reality of what actually occurs in orphanages behind closed doors.

Sarah-Jane says Otumoetai College blew judges away with their ‘moving and emotional' piece.

'They gave 100 per cent in each move they did. I loved watching their performance, they had me captivated from start to finish.”

'It was a well-executed story with a very clever mix of choreography, movement and drama,” says performance judge Dave Wilson.

Aquinas College placed second in the RAW Division on Thursday night with their performance ‘The Pressure to Discover Our True Self'.

Mount Maunganui Intermediate placed second in the Open Division on Friday night, with their performance ‘The Ark', while Bethlehem College claimed third place.
