A warrior effort for Elliott

The inner warrior of the city's daring and kind-hearted residents will be brought out next Saturday in a 4km dash through TECT All Terrain Park in support of a quadriplegic Tauranga teenager.

On June 20, teams of four will be tested mentally and physically in The Gym Tauranga's second annual Random Acts of Kindness Warrior Run which is this year raising funds for Elliott Keys.

Elliott has been given a one-to-five per cent chance of regaining movement past his shoulders after a mountain biking accident in July last year.

The decision to raise funds for Elliott was determined by a voting system using glass jars and marbles at The Gym. Members were asked to pop a marble into one of three jars representing three charities: Homes of Hope, Heart Kids New Zealand and Elliott Keys.

The Gym's Christine Rudden says Elliott was a clear winner. 'We stopped counting because he was just so far in front that it was unbelievable.”

The Warrior Run spans 4km of TECT All Terrain Park, with people jumping, climbing and crawling their way through more than 20 stations.

'There'll be challenges including walls, ropes, sandbags, tyres, mud, functional training and the MasterChef station which was really popular last year – and probably some huhu grubs,” says Christine.

She says the aim of the game is to have fun more than a competition.

'It's all about starting and finishing as a team. Even if you've never trained before in your life, you can still come along, take part and have a good time. It's about raising awareness for Elliott's cause.”

Christine says 172 warriors registered for the inaugural event last year, which added to 43 teams. This year, they're hoping for 60 teams. 'And you don't have to be a member to do it.”

People are encouraged to dress up and make it a fun event. As well as spot prizes, they're raffling off a Nestle Hamper and a Nespresso coffee machine, with all proceeds going to Elliott's family.

To register a team of four, collect a registration form from The Gym or contact them on 07 5783605.

Tickets cost $35 per person, and registrations close on June 17.

The Random Acts of Kindness Warrior Run is at TECT All Terrain Park on June 20. Late registrations are from 9am, events starts at 11am.
