Cane sweeps Chiefs' awards

The chance to make the Chiefs' number seven jersey his own has seen Sam Cane flourish this Super Rugby season, and he's reigned supreme at the 2015 Chiefs Awards as a result.

The 23-year-old made a clean sweep at last night's awards, collecting the Chiefs' Player of the Year gong as voted for by the Fans, the Chiefs' Player of the Year as voted for by the coaches, and the Players' Player of the Year.

In his acceptance speeches, Cane acknowledged how important the fans are to the Chiefs as they seek a third Super Rugby title in four years.

After debuting in 2011, the Reporoa product has been sharing loose forward duties with fellow Bay of Plenty product and Chiefs centurion Tanerau Latimer – now sitting on 64 Super Rugby caps.

But with Latimer heading to Japan after the 2014 season, Cane has come into his own, with many believing he is breathing heavily down All Blacks' captain Richie McCaw's neck after a standout campaign so far.

Heading into the final round robin match, Cane currently tops the tackling charts in terms of Kiwi players with 172 tackles, sitting behind just three South African players.

The Lions' Warren Whitely leads with 231 followed by Cheetahs Boom Prinsloo and Lions' Warwick Tecklenburg on 183. The next best Kiwi is Crusaders flanker Matt Todd on 144.

Chiefs' Rookie of the Year, as voted for by the Players, went to loose forward Michael Leitch, while one of the most prestigious awards - the Chiefs Mana Kotiate - went to hooker Hika Elliot, who will bring up 100 Super Rugby matches against the Hurricanes this Saturday.

Chiefs' captain Liam Messam presented the award to a visibly humbled Elliot.

In a new initiative, current staff member, former Chiefs chief executive and founding member of the Chiefs Don Shergold was presented with the Chiefs' Tohunga Award.

It is the first Chiefs' lifetime award to ever have been presented and was a fitting tribute to a man who has been part of the club for 20 years.

Don was presented with a special Chiefs' blazer by manager Stu Williams and chairman Dallas Fisher.

Chiefs' sponsorship manager Kate Roos was presented the Outstanding Contribution Award.

The Chiefs will head to Taranaki to host the Hurricanes on Saturday night in one of the most anticipated matches of the season.

With their spot in the play-offs already booked, they will mount a bid to snatch home advantage off the Highlanders for next week's fourth versus fifth wildcard qualifier.

Both teams are on 48 points - more than either the Australian or South African conference leaders - and both have 10 wins.
