Standing there in my high-heeled boots in the middle of a raging crowd, I knew I'd made a rookie mistake. FYI, heels and Six60 concerts do not mix.
But the heels stayed on for the full four hours. Beauty is pain, apparently.
Six60 thrilled the crowd at a sold-out ASB Arena on Sunday night. Photos: Tracy Hardy.
I have to admit, it's easier to forget the pain when you're being serenaded by the voice of Matiu Walters – Six60's lead singer.
He's good looking, talented, entertaining… and did I mention good looking?
If you can't tell already, I'm a Six60 fan and I'm not afraid to admit it. The songs, the talent and the boys – I love it all.
The final show of their national tour at ASB Arena on Sunday night didn't disappoint.
It included all of the usual concert antics: the token drunken dude being pulled from the crowd by the very serious and ticked-off security guard, the short skirts, random pashing – and the embarrassing, off-pitch singing.
That part was me. But I couldn't help but belt out the catchy lyrics of Rise Up, Forever and my new favourite – White Lines.
Neither could my flatmate. She was in her element. Like me, she's a huge fan. And like the band, she studied in Dunedin.
Formed in 2008, the founding members of the band met while studying at the University of Otago and took their name from the street address where they lived – 660 Castle Street.
So when the boys left the stage without singing her favourite Don't Forget Your Roots, she was understandably upset.
Almost 11pm on a Sunday night and the band headed backstage. A camera followed, filming the boys sculling back from a bottle of whiskey. That's when the crowd went wild.
‘Six60, Six60, Six60' they chanted. It was enough to bring them back on stage for a final two-song encore.
Don't Forget Your Roots was one of them, and they'd just made my flatmate's night.
And mine too. I'm sitting at work today with their songs still stuck in my head – to go with my extremely sore feet.
