Williams advanced through her qualifying round today, while Hareb got nudged back to the reperchage rounds where she had to contest a further heat.
Hareb exploded in the heat for a 17.33 point heat total scoring the event's first perfect ten point ride in the process.
Going in to the final day of the event, New Zealand is ranked seventh on the congested points table. A top seven finish will see the team qualify for the China Cup which will be contested against the top seven nations plus hosts China in January 2016.
The unbelievable run of swell continued at Popoyo Beach, Nicaragua today with perfect 1.5m waves and offshore winds prevailing.
In advancing through her heat today, Williams posted an 11.73 point heat total which included an 8.23 point ride for two critical forehand turns on one wave.
Williams finished second behind Tia Blanco (USA).
'Yeah I was so stoked to get that one wave to start of the heat,” said Williams. 'Unfortunately after that not much came through, but I managed to find a backup score to get me through the heat,” she added.
'I'm super stoked to have got through. It's challenging, with the heat you get so hot and dehydrated, so that's something that comes into play but my strategy won't change tomorrow, I am still taking it heat by heat,” said Williams, who is all too well aware that the level of surfing has been high and everyone including herself have their sights set on winning the same gold medal.
Williams will surf the semifinal with a chance of progressing directly into the final. Should she place third or fourth in the heat, she will be relegated to the reperchage rounds where she will have a further chance at making the final.
Hareb placed third in her qualifying heat but bounced back less than an hour later with a crushing victory in the reperchage rounds.
'That main round heat I was just a bit out of sync from my own mistakes,” said Hareb. 'I'm pretty disappointed I didn't make it through that one because I blew it myself. I guess it just fired me up for the next heat,” added a grinning Hareb.
'The last couple of heats my feet have been feeling slippery so I think I have been hesitating a bit with my surfing, even on that ten point ride my feet slipped around a few times,” said Hareb, who felt despite the perfect score she still had more left in the tank for bigger turns.
'I knew that wave had a good wall as soon as I took off, super glassy, so all I had to do was surf it.”
Hareb will need to surf a further two heats to advance through to the final of the Women's Division.
Preparation will be important with Hareb concentrating on sticking to her routine, having a big dinner tonight and getting a good night's sleep.
Williams will surf against Chelsea Tuach (BAR), Tia Blanco (USA) and Jessica Anderson (CHI) in her match up.
Hareb will compete against Miluska Tello (PER), Philippa Anderson (AUS) and Leilani McGonagle (CRI).Both Paige Hareb and Ella Williams have placed in the final of the event before.
Hareb finished runner up in 2010 to Chelsea Hedges (AUS). Williams placed fourth in the final in 2013 which was won by Dimity Stoyle (AUS).
