Lighting up the track

For the first time, organisers of the Papamoa Hills Night Walk are introducing a special remembrance site at the summit for people to honour their loved ones affected by breast cancer.

The fundraiser event, which takes place tonight and tomorrow, is aimed at raiseing funds for New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation and Breast Cancer Support Services Tauranga Trust.

Launched in 2000 by Tauranga women Tui Hambrook and Clare Worden, the walk offers entrants the chance to take to the Papamoa Hills after dark.

However, new to this year's walk is a remembrance site at the peak of hills, where walkers can leave messages for people they know who are affected by breast cancer.

Co-organiser Ali Hambling will be honouring her nana, who was diagnosed with breast cancer around 10 years ago. 'She's come through it and has been given the all clear now,” explains Ali.

The walk covers about 6km from Poplar Lane, up the Papamoa Hill trig before heading across to Summerhill Recreation Trails, where supper and coffee will be provided.

Walkers will then be transported by mini-van back to the carpark at Poplar Lane for coffee and cake.

Ali says the event can cater for up to 200 people each night. Tonight's walk is sold-out, while around 100 people have already registered for Saturday's event.

The uniqueness of the fundraiser is what makes the event so popular, says Ali.

'Not many people go up Papamoa Hills at night and there's such incredible views up there,” she adds.

'The fact that it's a guided walk up the hills makes it really unique and something different to do.”

Last year Ali says the event raised more than $13,000 for the breast cancer charities.

The walk, which begins at 6pm each night, costs $25, with all funds going towards the nominated charities. To register, click here.
