REVIEW: 2degrees Comedy Convoy

Five minutes into the show and Steve Wrigley is almost speechless. I've never seen anything like it – a comedian without a comeback.

Yes, the ‘f' bomb was dropped and he took the mickey out of Americans. It's what you'd expect at a comedy show though right?

Not according to two audience members, who stood up and walked straight back up the stairs at Baycourt Theatre last night. I'm guessing their $45 tickets to the 2degrees Comedy Convoy won't be refunded.

'Whoops, they've had enough already,” Steve jokes. There's a few giggles from the audience.

'It's enough for anybody,” yells the man. The audience falls silent. So does Steve.

I look at mum, she looks at me. We think it's part of the show. Then we look at Steve – and his eyebrows are raised, his mouth is open and he has no idea what to say.

'I'm not sure what I said,” says Steve – and he scratches his head.

But, the show must go on.

There's a few people still arriving. So Steve begins his tale about the salmon. He mentions the word ‘salmon' once and the audience giggles. He mentions it again and the audience claps. He mentions it a third time and the audience explodes into fits of laughter before turning to the latecomers.

They have no idea what just happened. They were late – and obviously weren't in on the joke. You had to have been there at the start to get it.

On with the show.

Steve introduces Guy Montgomery to the stage. He's a combination of goofy, awkward and modest. He brings his own life experiences into his comedy and exaggerates it. It's funny.

Justin Hamilton is next. He had both mum and I in fits of laughter. He talks fast and with quick wit. His comedy draws around the personal fact he's never met his father and that he hasn't had children of his own.

The references he makes to his observation of parents behaviours is hilarious. He tells it like it is.

Next up is the only female in the line-up, Rose Matafeo. She's confident, playful and self-deprecating. Rose talks about her failed romances, career fails and generally everything she's not good at. She's dorky, but adorable.

Last but not least is Nish Kumar. His humour is intelligent and entertaining at the same time. He starts off with a joke about himself. Yes, he's well aware he is an Asian man with an English accent. 'That's how English is supposed to be spoken,” he jokes. And the laughs continue from there.

All in all it was an enjoyable, funny – and extremely weird night. I do hope Steve finds out what it was he said to annoy that couple so early on in the event.

I'm a little perplexed myself. Perhaps they arrived at the wrong show.
