Linda & Carol 'in it to win it'

'Just let us loose on those roads' says rally duo Linda Loughlin of Tauranga and Auckland's Carol Liston ahead of this weekend's 2015 Targa Bambina Rally.

Racing in car #444 the pair have pledged to the throw the four km/h tolerance straight out the window when the much-loved rally returns to the Coromandel Peninsula on Friday and Saturday.

The Coromandel leg features 280km of closed road stages and will offer drivers a real motoring challenge while providing some of the best scenic views in town.

This weekend will be the first time driver Carol and co-driver Linda have competed in a rally held on the Coromandel Peninsula and both are excited by what awaits them.

'The roads in the Coromandel are quite challenging,” explains Linda, who is also the secretary for Motorsport BOP. 'They're windy and won't be much fun early in the morning, especially if it's raining.

'But we'll see, I'm expecting an exciting weekend nonetheless, Carol's a very good driver – she is fast and very competent.”

It is shared sentiments by Carol, who admits the Coromandel's roads were a big part of the attraction for her to enter.

'They're fun roads and they flow,” says Carol. 'Because the car's little, I'll be able to keep my average speed up easier than the bigger cars.”

'The nerves are starting to kick in which is to be expected. But they're the good kind of nerves, you'd be worried if you didn't have them.”

The pair enjoy a great partnership both inside and outside the car and last competed together at the Metalman Targa NZ Rally Sprint held in Ardmore during March.

It was also at this event Carol unveiled her new 1997 Honda Civic Type-R, after upgrading from a 1990 Honda CRX which she had raced for more than 10 years.

Linda says: 'The car handled well, it's a speedy little vehicle and Carol's really pleased with it how it went.”

'We were doing really well during the sprint event until the last stage where we had a little off, but it wasn't too serious thankfully.”

Not only are they looking forward to the upcoming challenge, Carol says they are definitely in it to win it.

They've had some success in the past, she says, and will be looking to repeat their winning ways this weekend.

'We both enjoy doing what we're doing, and we're of a similar era,” says Carol laughing. 'Linda and I are both really competitive and our goals are pretty similar.

'We not racing to come last, we are there to win.”
