Q. I'm worried about our next-door neighbour. His garden is overgrown, and I help out with his lawns, but don't have time to do all the work that is needed. I took some baking over to him, and was really concerned about the state of the house. I know he fought in the Second World War and I think he should be looked after, after everything he did for our country.
You are absolutely right, we should look after our war veterans, and you will be pleased to know there is help. Veterans Affairs has case managers who are able to help elderly and disabled veterans stay independent in their own home. They are also able to assist with accessing funding for section maintenance. You can contact them directly on phone 0800 4 VETERAN (0800 4 838372).
The other place you can talk to is the local RSA. They have welfare officers who are able to help with support and practical help. They can also contact Veterans Affairs for you. Everything you tell them is confidential.
