Zespri warns growers to be alert

Zespri CEO Lain Jager is warning kiwifruit growers across the Bay of Plenty to be extra vigilant of their crops.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry confirmed on Monday that pseudomonas syringae pv actinidiae, commonly referred to as psa, may have infected a Bay of Plenty orchard.

Lain Jager talks to SunLive on camera about the suspected infection and how devastating it could be for New Zealand's billion dollar kiwifruit industry.

Lain would not reveal the exact location of the infected orchard, but SunLive understands it is in the Te Matai Road area in Te Puke.

He is urging kiwifruit growers in the region to inspect their crops and look for dark spots on leaves.

Lain says it is too early to tell if the suspected psa infection will have a financial impact on the industry.

'It's early days. There could be a market access impact but we are at the end of the season so any financial impact for the season will be limited because most of the crop is sold.”
