Safety risk closes Bluff Rd

The Thames Coromandel District Council says Bluff Rd will be closed until further notice due to serious safety concerns.

An overhanging bluff about 350 meters from the Matarangi end of the road has become a high safety risk for vehicles and pedestrians.

Council says the road is being closed today and signage will be in place by the end of the week at the latest.

Barricades will go in today to prevent any potential injury should any part of the overhang collapse.

Motorists who use Bulff Rd to travel between Kuaotunu and Matarangi are being asked to find an alternative route.

Investigations will need to be undertaken to figure out the best way to solve the problem and how much the options will cost ratepayers.

Once investigations are complete, options will be brought back to council for a decision on the best way forward.

Council says it will be working as quickly as possible to collect all the information it needs to make an informed decision.
