Conway takes historic 9-47 haul in Mount draw

Mount Maunganui seamer Henry Conway celebrated a rare piece of club history after claiming an extraordinary 9-47 against Te Puke, recording just the fourth nine-wicket haul by a Mount Premier bowler in the club's 64-year history and the best bowling figures of the Bay of Plenty Cup season so far. A historic bowling performance by Bond & Co Mount Maunganui’s Henry Conway has highlighted a bowler-dominated third round of the Bay of Plenty Cup.

Conway etched his name into Mount Maunganui Cricket Club folklore with a remarkable haul of 9-47 against Flying Mullet Te Puke at Te Puke Domain on Saturday.

The Premier seamer claimed the first six wickets to fall before teammate Kale Wellington broke the streak by dismissing Te Puke’s No 8 batter. Conway then returned to remove the final three batters as Te Puke were bowled out for 178.

The nine-wicket effort is just the fourth time a Mount Premier bowler has achieved the feat in the club’s 64-year history.

David Andersen captured 9-17 against Katikati in 1969-70 and followed it with 9-24 against Albion the next season, while Derek Beard claimed 9-22 against Whakatāne 18 years later.

Despite Conway’s heroics, Te Puke’s bowlers fought back strongly, restricting Mount to 147-9 and securing a draw.

Pāpāmoa suffered heartbreak for the second consecutive week, falling just two runs short in a tense chase against Generation Homes Lake Taupō.

Taupō posted 142 before being dismissed, with Mathew Libby and Jamie Veall taking three wickets apiece. Libby then backed up with the bat, scoring an unbeaten 51 and sharing a crucial partnership with Daniel Snyman (36).

However, A.J. How claimed the final three wickets on his way to figures of 6-38, helping bowl Pāpāmoa out for 141.

Raukura Central secured a 50-run victory over Eves Bay of Plenty Indians after compiling 192.

Harshil Doshi starred with the ball for Indians, taking 6-67, but Central’s attack responded through Ben Clilverd, who finished with 5-61 as the Indians were dismissed for 142.

The match between Craig’s Geyser City and Eves Greerton was one-sided from start to finish. Geyser City were bowled out for just 58, with Billy Ramsden taking 5-17 and Troy Scrimgeour 3-3.

Greerton needed only 10 overs to reach 62 without loss, with Reuben Swanepoel (33 not out) and James Gatenby-Hinton (27 not out) guiding their side to a commanding 10-wicket victory.

Conway’s record-breaking 9-47 not only earned the best bowling figures of the round but also stands as the Bay of Plenty Cup season’s best performance after three rounds.
