Tauranga’s Diwali Festival will bring an afternoon and evening of Indian culture, music, dance and food to the Tauranga Historic Village on Saturday, November 7.
Running from 2pm to 9pm, the family-friendly festival offers a chance to experience the vibrant colours and traditions of Diwali, with entry by gold coin donation.
Festival organiser Bela Dasi said “it’s an absolute honour to welcome top-tier talents and dance masters” to the event, which is presented by One Love Charity.
“We will be showcasing some of Aotearoa’s most established dancers, as well as artists breaking through as rising talents,” she said.
Visitors can look forward to classical dance, Bollywood, Bhangra, kirtan music and drama performances, alongside a range of activities celebrating Indian culture and creativity.
Food will be another highlight, with Indian street food favourites, finger-food platters, ice cream, coffee, tea, smoothies and other treats available throughout the festival village.
“If you’d rather take a break from cooking on 7 November, we’ve got you covered,” Dasi said.

Visitors can look forward to classical dance, Bollywood, Bhangra and kirtan music, celebrating Indian culture and creativity.
Stalls will also offer jewellery, incense, puja items and home decor, providing an opportunity to browse distinctive gifts and cultural products.
“On display will be a wide mix of ethnic and nostalgic items.”
Dasi said the festival has developed a reputation for its friendly, inclusive atmosphere, with visitors telling organisers they feel at home there.
“Festivals often get viewed through the lens of music, but a lot of other things happen too,” she said.
“Nurturing an environment where people can be comfortable and relaxed, and where they can express themselves creatively and spiritually and feel like they’re part of a community has been core to the Tauranga Diwali’s foundation.”
Festivalgoers are encouraged to dress up, join in diya (traditional oil lamp) and rangoli-making activities, sing along to the music and enjoy time with family and friends.
The Tauranga Diwali Festival is now in its seventh year and is held annually by One Love Charity, which also presents the Holi Colour Splash event in March.
“The festival as an opportunity for the community to come together, enjoy Indian arts and traditions, and make new connections in a relaxed setting,” Dasi said. “Beliefs, customs and cultures may differ profoundly, yet respect for the dignity of every person remains possible and is essential for love and peace to prevail.”
