Owners of a Pyes Pa property were taught an unexpected lesson on how quickly a fire can develop after their fireworks accidentally burned about 100m of a shelterbelt overnight.

Firefighters were called to a shelterbelt fire at Edwards Ave about 9pm on Saturday after Greerton Fire Brigade station officer Steve Wright says fireworks set the scrub alight.

Steve says about 100m of vegetation was in flames when firefighters arrived and with the fire escalating quickly, two fire trucks and a water tanker were called in to help fight the blaze.

'We were there for a couple of hours,” says Steve. 'There was an implement shed close by but it wasn't under threat.”

The owners of the property were at the scene when firefighters arrived but were not injured in the incident, says Steve, who urges residents to be aware of what's around them and know which way the wind is blowing when lighting fireworks.

'When you're setting off fireworks in rural areas you need to be particularly aware of where the nearest vegetation is.

'In this case it was probably a little too close to the shelterbelt – and they got a lesson in how quickly a fire can develop.”

This comes after a large scrub fire in Bellevue yesterday afternoon which is also believed to have been started by fireworks.

Tauranga Fire Brigade was called to the scene at the end of Westwood St about 3.30pm on Saturday after Northern Fire Communications shift manager Steve Smith says 100m by 50m of flax and scrub was found burning.

Again not the fireworks the idiots using them. I have let off my own fireworks for years and never had anyone get burned or started unnecessary fire from fireworks. so why ban fireworks for private use. when its the minority idiots that don't think first.
