SunLive readers: "no" to new flag

The Bay of Plenty has delivered an emphatic 'no” to the idea of a new national flag.

In an online poll run over the space of a week here at SunLive, a whopping 80 per cent rejected the Government's idea for a new flag.

From the 1,172 people who responded to the poll, 941 (80 per cent) voted against a new flag and 231 (20 per cent) voted in favour.

It's believed the $25.7 million price tag for the flag referendums could have prompted the response.

Despite the resounding 'no”, the Government is proceeding with Prime Minister John Key's 'pet project”.

The best three or four alternate flag designs will be put to the public in a referendum late next year. The winner will then go to a ‘play-off' with the existing flag in another referendum in April 2016.

Facing questions in Parliament on the massive costs, Mr Key says: 'What price do you put on democracy where people can genuinely have their say on a matter that is actually important?”

The resounding poll result also comes on a day when prominent Tauranga artist Dave Roy personally endorsed the controversial Maori flag Tino Rangatiratanga as 'simply the best contender for the new flag.”

Dave Roy, who is not Maori, accepts some people will not like the political connotations attached to the flag.

That's because it's widely perceived by middle-New Zealand as a symbol of Maori separatism and protest.

But Dave Roy suggests those people should 'get over their prejudices”.

He says; ”From a purely aesthetic artist's point of view, the flag is simple, well-balanced and strong. It embodies wonderful strength and harmony.”

One of the flag's designers, Linda Munn of Tauranga, says if people feel positive when they look at her Maori flag , then fine – 'job done!” she adds.

Once Again...

And not for the first time this government will ignore the majority and proceed with their own agenda. New Zealanders must demand that any referendum on changing the flag firstly asks the question "Should we change" as opposed to a predetermined "Which one"? It is sadly ironic for a politician like John Key, who has an obvious affection for all things American, that he does not grasp the concept of "By the people, for the people".

You could say that

It is typical of John Key not to take any notice of what the people say.I wonder can he tell me WHY HE BOTHERS TO ASK.Rest assure he has made up his mind already to change the flag.So why all the expense of a referendem.Just go to it Mr Key

Some things are important. This not. Kick it for touch.

$25.7 million price tag ?

that was not a factor in me voting against it, the NZ flag now is just fine. A consequence of that is not wasting $25.7m, think of it as a bonus.

John Keys ego

He ignore a referendum before and this is all about an ego trip so regardless of the outcome he will go ahead so is the arrogance of the Government. The $27 million should be spent on a much better cause than this. Our ancestors fought and died under this flag and the RSA are not happy about a change.listen to the people John Key.

It's safe to assume our local MP (Simon Bridges) will NOT take this overwhelming result to his leader. But will rather bury it somewhere.

John Key hates the British and wishes he was American. He should be tried for treason and sent immediately to the Tower of London. Off with his hid.

Sounds like a typical Tauranga result.
