With the general election just over a month away, honesty is the one thing people are asking of politicians.
Campaign trails are well underway as party candidates vie for the votes of their community in order to get them into their chosen seat on September 20.
Many political parties are promising new policies around education and health care, along with better wages and proposed tax cuts if elected.
SunLive asked members of the public what a politician would have to do in order to secure their vote?
The answer was crystal clear, with the majority of people interviewed calling for politicians to be honest about their intentions.

Most of us believe we are basically honest but you only have to see the News to realize there are many people deluding themselves about this. Diogenes the Cynic believed there were NO truly honest people, and yet he wandered the streets of Athens with a lantern looking for an "honest man", in the forlorn hope that such a super being might have evolved. If you want honesty from people, you need to make it safe for them to BE honest with you. If most of our politicians revealed what their REAL agendas were, nobody would vote for them. So they present the same old platitudes and we end up with representatives we really didn't want, but probably deserve. If you want honest politicians, make society honest. Start with yourself, then encourage your friends. I think it could work... honestly...

And politicians, now that is a complete contradiction now isn't it. At least Winnie did what said once, that was a miracle and no dolls, do we want more of the same? Round two????

hasn't been born yet. Hope local incumbents are listening, they and the aspirers should take these interviews to heart. Albeit a small scale, that's a huge message! Too many times we see the ‘it's all about me' attitude, quickly forgotten is how they actually got to where they are, that reason being that people believed in what they said. Let's face it, the average politician doesn't give a damn about their constituents, they simply got what they wanted (elected), after which constituents are a nuisance because they mean nothing more than hard work for the vote catcher, and by and large hard work is an anathema to politicians. Goes for mayors and councillors too. Only got to look at a couple of our lot to see that. Enforced accountability for all of them, ‘you don't perform according to your promises, you're out'. Emulation not a good look either.
