Hunters bag top catch

The Polaris Big Four is drawing hunters from all over the North Island to Te Puna to see who can bag the big one.

Hunters have had the last week to bag themselves a red stag, a wild boar, a trout and a red ring cock pheasant ahead of this weekend's weigh in at Top Shot Bar in Te Puna.

Fynn Newman from Tauranga with his 4.65kg trout he caught on Lake Rotoiti.

Te Puna Hunting and Fishing Club president Gary Sobye says they weigh in has been good.

'Quite a few teams had managed to bag their four animals so they are quite happy.

'We have had 76 teams of four people enter this year's competition.”

People have travelled as far as Masterton to compete in the event, along with hunters from Te Awamutu, Taupo and Taumaranui.

'They have come a long way.”

This is the fourth year the event has been taken place and Gary says it has been popular right from the start.

Major team prizes are up for grabs while there are also individual prizes for the heaviest, boar, heaviest, stag, best pheasant and closer to the average weight trout.

The best Douglas score for the stag, best tasks on a boar, longest fighting spurs on a pheasant and average weight trout are also worth $1500.
