Ministry intervention possible

Formal intervention by Ministry of Education to the governance of Tauranga Girls' College is one of the options being considered by the school's board.
This comes after Board of Trustee members, Mike Horsley, Eddie Bauckham and chairperson Judith Logan resigned and in doing so stated ongoing conflicts with the principal due to ‘significant' issues.

A meeting between officials from the Ministry, school trustees and principal Pauline Cowens was held at the school on Thursday night, where options for the school's governance were discussed.
New Zealand School Trustees Association representative Kate Lethbridge was also at the meeting. She says discussions at the meeting ranged from less formal support to formal intervention.
Ministry of Education spokesperson Julia Craven says forms of intervention can include: a commissioner being appointed by the Ministry or the board being asked to provide information to the Ministry, a statutory manager appointed to the board and the board preparing an action plan.
Chairperson Ross Brown is hopeful the school will find a way forward.
'We want to assure parents that the school is functioning well and it is business as usual,” says Ross.
The board expects Ministry advice and support within a few days.
