Tahatai Coast School principal Ian Leckie was among the NZEI union members who took their concerns over the controversial national standards system to the parents of Tauranga on Thursday.
He and the other union members visited five Tauranga schools on a bus that is travelling through the country as part of the union's nationwide national standards tour.
See video interview below with Tahatai Coast School principal Ian Leckie, one of the NZEI union members who travelled around Tauranga schools on the national standards bus on Thursday.
National standards, which are targets for reading, writing and arithmetic that students Years 1-8 are expected to achieve by the end of every year, started in all primary schools and intermediates this year.
Ian says Tauranga parents need to know how the system is going to affect their children.
'We met with lots and lots of parents, teachers and even students.
'The standards themselves are not the problem. We don't have a problem with standards.
'The problem is the system has not been checked, it has not been tested and we're being asked to label our children with a label that may not be the right one at the moment.”
Grandmother Denise Stevenson was picking up her two grandchildren from Otumoetai Primary School when she was approached by the NZEI members.
But she believes national standards is a positive step for her grandchildren.
'I think it's important they have standards they have to meet. It means accountability for teachers and to show students are learning.”
