A new city events policy intended to put Tauranga on the map as a major events destination both nationally and internationally will be put to the public.
Tauranga City Council has today adopted a proposed new policy that will provide an additional $382,000 to the events plan structure, bringing its total budget to $582,000.

Cant see that TCC administring events and entertainment will be a good use of money, TCC efforts to date have all resulting in huge losses nd costs to ratepayers, the hoped for benefits have filed to materialise anywhere or anytime.

I agree with The Master probably the only person at TCC would be Gary Dawson .The councillors will need to be aware of past episodes when it comes to their staff in organising entertainment in this city.
A forced ratepayer subsidy

As ratepayers were are subsidising these events in the "hope" that it will attract visitors, they will spend money at restaurants, motels, icecream shops etc. The ratepayer is therefore forced to support local businesses. This is not what I intend my rates to pay for. Surely the upkeep of parks, beaches, roads, library, sewerage, water is more important than this enforced payment to support a few?

I do not believe it is the job of council to involve itself with any undertaking other that its core responsibilities - I note that the majority of those questioned were very obviously not ratepayers and councils past experience shows that the estimated returns never seem to eventuate. Leave it to non council organizations and businesses to run events - certainly the council can assist by making it easier for others to organize events but ratepayers money in any city should never be invested in what at best is always a gamble!
Absolute nonsense

For a city that is deep in debt, this is just ridiculous. Sure, it is good to have events here but let them be organised by NON-TCC people and let the Council simply act as facilitators. It is outrageous that ratepayers should be burdened with something which is NOT part of the core business of the TCC. If you want Tauranga made famous, get the debt under control and stop penalizing the Ratepayers for years of mis-management and failure to invest properly in essential maintenance and services by successive councils. Does anybody think (for instance) that the Jazz festival wouldn't happen UNLESS Council subsidize it? The events people want will be organized and funded by the people who want them, as long as there aren't miles of red tape to inhibit the process. Make it easy, it will happen. And WITHOUT ratepayers being hit for it.
yep!!!!

I don't want to appear negative but the new councillors are a disappointment. They appear to want to throw more good ratepayers money after bad. After all the bad experiences with putting money into and supporting events that have lost considerable amounts of money in the past they want to throw even more money at events that in all probability will also make a loss in a big way. They obviously have not learned from previous councils major mistakes.

If the council has to much money how about giving it back to the rate payers. The very people that pay their wages & support their city 365 days of the year. Events will only make the rich richer, makes no change to the rate payers weekly wage. I am a rate payer & while the council is out there offering my money I am spending time away from my kids at work trying to make ends meet. Reality check council.
