Tauranga Police are clamping down on cyclists not wearing helmets and have issued 53 tickets during the first week of their campaign.
People of all ages had been caught by police and fined $55.
The campaign will run until the end of the month.
To see what the community thought about cyclists wearing helmets, SunLive took to the streets to ask people what they thought.

Its a no brainer. helmets should be compulsory. That guy that is 2nd on the video saying if people fall off and hurt there heads its there fault. Dont even think of the consequenses, . Fine should be twice that of a helmet.

my grandson wouldn't be here today if he wasn't wearing a helmet. he is 16 thought he new it all had a crash and if he wasn't wearing a helmet .wouldnt be here today.

My bike hit a minor pothole at low speed. It stopped with the wheel at a right angle. I hurtled over the handle bar and the full force of the fall was taken by the top of the helmet which was the motor-bike style, not a turtle, so my head was nestled inside a polystyrene lining. I was so glad I had bought that type as when my head hit the road then went sideways I was still protected, and oddly not a scratch, just a bruised hand.

Should be $150 and loss of the front wheel till you can show you have a helmet at the police station.

The Helmet Lady of Palmerston North who toured the country after her son had a bad accident and left him needing permanent care needs to tour again. It is not always how fast or slow you are going and it can be like By Ratepayer, a pot hole a speeding car, a pedestrian. Drivers are required to wear seat belts, Cyclists are required to wear helmets end of story if you wish to live.

It is really not a choice it is the LAW. No helmet NO ACC if you are involved in an accident. It is called an accident, 'cause hopefully you don't fall off by choice, accidents DO happen, so wear a helmet just in case!!! Love MAILDROP's spelling?

Helmets on heads are there for a reason.To protect you...I did live in Palmy and I know where it started from.When there is a accident Car V bike the bike ALWAYS comes off second best.IT IS A WAIST OF TIME HELMETS BEING BEING SWUNG FROM THE HANDLE BARS.

My husband had a major accident on his bike and suffered serious head injuries even though he was wearing an expensive helmet. However he would have definitely died that day if he hadn't been wearing that helmet, and is thankfully pretty well fully recovered.

Like many have said before, wear your helmet we will take care of you. Don't wear your helmet, don't get ACC or any other help other than basic care. About time we started treating people with the same contempt they have for common sense.
