Motorists in the Mount Maunganui Primary School area will be extra aware of children riding bikes from Monday morning.
The school is the first participant in the ‘Someone's Kid' school bag cover project after students were presented with their new piece of riding equipment last Friday.
Mount Maunganui Primary School students try out their new hi-viz gear.
Kids can Ride coordinator Iris Thomas says this project fits well with Mount Primary because of its ‘travelsafe' policy, which makes it compulsory for all students biking to and from school to wear high visibility vests.
But vests and school bags are a clumsy fit and have not always mixed well leading to the invention of this new garment; a high visibility vest that fits over a school bag, keeps it dry and shows a solid mass of hi-viz colour.
Iris says a special feature of the vest is the inscription on the back, ‘Someone's Kid', to remind drivers that the cyclist is only a child and that all children are special to someone.
Mt Primary is the first school this year to be offered the project and as the Tauranga City Council cycle safety programme visits schools during 2010, the option will be given.
