A school bus shortage for Tauranga Girls' College students travelling from Papamoa will be temporarily alleviated now that a second bus is being supplied.
A SunLive article on Thursday revealed girls from the college were being left stranded on the roadside because there was not enough room on the school bus.
Tauranga Girls' College student Jade Graves was left stranded on the roadside because there was not enough room the school bus.
Tauranga Girls' College deputy principal and school bus coordinator Leonie Summerville says at this stage the second school bus will only operate next week.
She still needs to approach the school's Board of Trustees to ask for funds so the second school bus can operate on a long-term basis.
The school estimates about 60 girls from Papamoa have been forced to find alternative means of transport as a result of the bus shortage.
Leanne is one Papamoa mother whose Year 10 daughter was left stranded.
She says the announcement is great news and recognises the school has been doing its best to solve the problem.
'Sadly they are being reactive rather than proactive, given that they knew about this three months ago, but they have their fair share of obstacles that have been presented to them.”
'It's crazy that there are partially empty buses from nearby schools that the girls used to be able to share, but now can't and it would be interesting to know why not.”
She says the Tauranga Boys' College bus is also overloaded so surely all the neighbouring schools can work together and cooperate.
'After all, the children's safety is absolutely paramount.”
'We hope that this resolve is long term and that the girls can now get to school safely, and the huge overcrowding problem is a thing of the past, but unfortunately most parents will probably still be apprehensive.”

Curious: What does it cost the students to travel on the bus?
