Antiques road show at Kawerau

Organisers are gearing up for what they hope will be one of the biggest antiques and collectables road
shows in the region at Kawerau during Queens Birthday Weekend.

Organised by the Eastern Bay of Plenty branch of the NZ Motor Caravan Association, the event will feature valuation by four experts, antiques, collectibles, bric-a-brac and an auction, says one of the organisers Ray Barton.

Here's to a successful antiques road show – Ray Barton and Jacqui Davis toast the Queen's Birthday
Weekend event at Kawerau.

'We were keen to arrange an event of interest to our members and the public during Queen's birthday weekend and saw this as an ideal way to help raise funds for Hospice Eastern Bay of Plenty,” says Ray.

Jacqui Davis, public relations coordinator for Hospice Eastern Bay of Plenty, says the organisation is delighted to be the beneficiary of the antiques road show. 'Annually we have a shortfall of $350,000 in operating costs and need the support of the local community to continue to offer the services we do to clients and their families throughout the Eastern Bay of Plenty.” Expert valuers at the road show will be Jacqui Otley who has completed courses run by Southeby's, Wayne Marriott former conservator of the Whakatane Museum, Rotorua art dealer and collector John McCartney, and Lois Ions who has been involved in coin and stamp collecting for 33 years. Ray says while the event is expected to attract motorhomers from throughout the region and further afield to stay for the weekend, anyone is welcome to attend the show and bring along antiques and collectables to be valued for a small fee. 'People may also wish to enter items in the auction with 10 per cent commission on items sold going straight to hospice. We're also inviting people to set up bric-a-brac sales tables and there will be a fee for this too.” Jacqui says the Eastern Bay Hospice shop in Whakatane will be entering a bric-a-brac table and will have items for valuation and for auction. 'We receive the most wonderful donations, including antiques, from the public to our shop so this will be a further opportunity to offer them to the public,” she says.
The road show will be at the Kawerau Town Hall, Islington St, Kawerau on Saturday and Sunday, June 1 and 2 from 10am to 3pm with the auction beginning at 3.30pm on Sunday.
