A community scrap metal fundraiser has pushed Te Puna Rugby Sports and Cultural Club’s building fund beyond the $100,000 mark.
Volunteers collected almost 4.5 tonnes of metal and raised almost $15,000 last week.
The club’s Metal Muster drew support from across the community, with a team of more than 25 volunteers working across collection points at Farmlands and the Landmax depot on Plummers Point Rd.
By mid-morning, the first of several skips supplied by Metalco were full as a steady stream of donations continued throughout the day.
Event co-organiser Andrew George said the day was “next level”.
“The work put in was awesome, the support from the community was out the gate.
“I had a feeling we might have been busy, but today was next level.”
The fundraising effort is set to grow further, with co-organiser James Vincent still collecting several large items.
“A 14000L stainless steel vat tank, tractors and 2.5 tonnes of steel bits and bobs, oh yeah and a caravan,” Vincent said.

Donations included whiteware, roofing iron, bicycles, machinery, car batteries and other scrap metal.
“Flipping heck that’s out the gate.”

More than $3500 was raised from non-ferrous metals, while lead batteries contributed a further $1400.
The funds will help support plans for a new clubhouse at Maramatanga Park.
While the building fund has now surpassed $100,000, the club still needs another $200,000.
This is to complete detailed designs, professional reports and requirements needed for council building consent before seeking grants for the multimillion-dollar redevelopment.
Metalco’s Aerodrome Rd depot will continue accepting scrap metal donations for the club.
Organisers are also considering another community metal collection drive in coming months.
