Tauranga motorists are being warned to expect overnight closures and detours on State Highway 29/Takitimu Drive Toll Road in early November as crews carry out asphalt paving.

The toll road will close in both directions on November 1, before city-bound lanes are closed over the following three nights, an NZ Transport Agency statement said.

The Sunday night closure will run from 8pm until 4am, weather permitting, and includes SH2 from Elizabeth St through to SH29/Takitimu Drive Toll Road.

NZTA said the full closure was needed so crews could safely complete asphalt work and make changes to temporary traffic management barriers.

Motorists travelling west towards Bethlehem on SH2 will be detoured via Cameron Rd to 15th Ave, while SH29 traffic heading south towards Tauriko will be directed via Cameron Rd to SH29A.

From November 2, work will focus on the city-bound lanes of SH29/Takitimu Drive Toll Road.

Crews will lay new asphalt between the new Takitimu North Link flyover bridge and the SH2 connection, with the work intended to provide a smoother and more resilient road surface.

The city-bound closure, affecting traffic travelling from Tauriko towards the city and Mount Maunganui, will operate between 8pm and 4am, with a northbound detour via SH29A.

Work could extend to a fifth night on November 5 if weather causes delays.

NZTA said carrying out the work at night, when traffic volumes are lower, will reduce disruption while providing a safer environment for road crews.

Motorists are being encouraged to plan ahead, allow extra travel time and consider alternative routes.
