The search for Steps, Tauranga Hospital’s much-loved cat, is over after Steps was found safe less than two days after he disappeared.
The 12-year-old tabby, affectionately known as the hospital cat, had sparked a community-wide search after he was last seen at 11pm on August 3.
Steps’ disappearance, along with his small shelter, prompted concern from thousands of people who knew the friendly feline.
The breakthrough came on this morning when a Gate Pā resident posted on the Lost and Found Pets Tauranga Facebook page asking if anyone recognised a cat.
The post described the visitor as “very friendly” and “very smart.”
She said the tabby and white cat had broken through her microchip cat door before making himself comfortable on her bed last night.
“Definitely a pet and currently trying to adopt me as its owner. My cat is not loving that idea.”
Little did she know she had been hosting one of Tauranga’s most recognisable cats.
Steps’ day-to-day caregiver, Karla Horn, spotted the post and said she had driven to the property, where she reunited with the wandering tabby.
The Facebook post quickly attracted more than 1600 reactions as news spread that Steps had been found, with hundreds of relieved commenters celebrating his safe return.
One comment said: “You just had the most famous cat in NZ turn up on your doorstep! So good!”
Another said: “Cat’s got no idea the whole nation’s out looking for him.”

I never met Dr Steps, but when I read this news a feeling of relief and goodwill swept over me.
It's relief that nothing bad had happened, as much as relief that the cat is safe.
When we read about Humans being cruel to animals it simply demeans all of us; fortunately, when we find that hasn't been the case, the converse is also true.
The efforts made to locate Dr. Steps show that most of us are NOT cruel, disturbed, people.
I can state this CATegorically...
Happy Ending

"She said the tabby and white cat had broken through her microchip cat door before making himself comfortable on her bed last night."
Would have thought that the door would only have let in the correct cat??
Something doesn't sound right here..
Donation of new home

Hopefully one of these animal shops donates a new home to Steps. Love to see his new home locked down. Shocking to think we have to do that. Steps needs a security camera to ensure nobody else ever takes his home again. He warms so many peoples hearts & his love helps all the wellness many need.

So pleased Dr Steps is back safely - I loved his presence at the hospital every day when my Dad was terminally ill. And it has been heartwarming how the community has bonded together over a wee creature - restores my faith in mankind.
Not sure on the story of who had/found him though.... Steps and his house went missing at the same time.... and breaking in through a microchip cat door.... I know it can be done, but it just doesn't all sit right. Wonder what happened to his little house?
But really just glad he's home safe.
I cannot imagine....

....that Dr Steps is not micro chipped and his location known, but if not, perhaps a 'go fund meoww page' needs to be established ;)
