A woman is facing charges after reports of vehicles allegedly being taken from sellers during Marketplace transactions in Waikato.

Waikato police said in a post on Facebook that the arrest followed multiple complaints from people who had met a potential buyer through Facebook Marketplace and later had vehicles taken without receiving payment.

A 26-year-old woman was located hiding in a wardrobe at a Hamilton property and arrested on outstanding warrants, police said.

She is due to appear in Hamilton District Court today on the warrants and faces an additional charge of obtaining by deception.

Police are continuing to investigate and are trying to locate several vehicles believed to be outstanding as part of the inquiry.

The arrest serves as a reminder for people, including those in Bay of Plenty, selling items through online marketplaces to take precautions and verify payments before handing over goods, police said.

“Never trust a screenshot anyone shows or sends you that says a payment has been made. Check your own bank account to make sure payment has gone through.”

Police are asking anyone with information relevant to the investigation to contact 105 and quote file number 260916/1823.
