Rotorua’s toastie-making talent is in the national spotlight, with two local eateries named among the finalists in the 2026 Great New Zealand Toastie Takeover competition.

Capers Cafe & Store and the Ōkere Falls Store have earned places in the competition’s final 19, selected from more than 200 cafes, restaurants, food trucks and pop-ups nationwide.

Capers Cafe & Store impressed judges with its Melt Everest toastie, while the Ōkere Falls Store secured a finalist spot with The Mouthful | Fleischkaes, a media release from the competition said.

The finalists were chosen after judges travelled the country tasting and scoring entries, while thousands of New Zealanders sampled the limited-time creations throughout winter.

Head judge Kerry Tyack said the standard of competition this year was exceptionally high.

“The quality this year was exceptional,” Tyack said.

“Not only did we see record-breaking scores, but the depth of talent meant we have more finalists than ever before. Across the country, chefs have taken a Kiwi classic and made it their own, showcasing regional flavours, quality local produce, McClure’s Pickles of course, and the simple joy of sharing a really good toastie.”

The two Rotorua finalists will remain on menus until August 20, giving locals the chance to taste-test the creations before the Supreme Winner is announced.

The Great New Zealand Toastie Takeover attracted thousands of diners this year, with a record 19 finalists making the cut. Rotorua was one of only a handful of regions to have multiple eateries represented in the finals.

The competition is supported by McClure’s Pickles and celebrates inventive takes on the classic toasted sandwich, with entries judged on flavour, execution and creativity.
