Community pizza night backs fire victims

Domino’s Bureta is fundraising to help Aroha Te Wheoro’s family rebuild after a July 6 house fire.

Domino’s Bureta is rallying the community to help a family rebuild after a devastating house fire destroyed three generations of memories earlier this month.

The Ōtūmoetai pizza store will hold a “Raise Some Dough” fundraiser on Friday, with $1 from every pizza sold between 4pm and 9pm donated to Aroha Te Wheoro and her family.

The fundraiser applies to all regular pizzas purchased in-store, online or through the Domino’s app, excluding mini pizzas.

Te Wheoro and her family lost everything when fire tore through their Carmichael Rd home on July 6.

The Bethlehem house, built by her father, had been in the family for three generations.

“I grew up here with my koro. I had my 21st here, and my 21st key went up in flames as well. Just a lot of memories,” she previously told NZME.

She and her partner were the only ones inside when she noticed smoke while watching television about 3pm.

Te Wheoro ran outside and tried to extinguish a small fire on an exterior wall.

“I ran out, and there was this little fire. I grabbed the closest thing I could, which was a water bottle, and put that on it.”

She ran inside to refill it, but when she returned, the wind had pushed flames further across the house and they could not be contained.

The house was engulfed in 20 minutes.

Te Wheoro said the family had lost generations of memories along with treasured keepsakes, including a third-generation pool table.

“A lot of our whakapapa has gone.”

Although everyone escaped unharmed, Te Wheoro said the emotional toll was immense.

“Gathering ourselves now, next step. We know that we can’t replace everything.”

Domino’s Bureta hopes the fundraising evening will give the community a chance to help the family get back on their feet.

Insurance

I remember vividly as a child we lost everything to a house fire not long after coming to New Zealand and wouldn't wish this on anyone, so my heart goes out to you. However, that's why you have insurance. Especially if you had so much 'stuff' that had meaning and love to you.
As my Dad use to say, insurance is a necessary evil.
I trust you, your family and friends that don't have insurance, will now get it. It's a necessary evil. We hate it until we need it. Then it's a blessing indeed.
