A new purpose-built wetland is taking shape in Tauranga’s Tauriko area.

The large constructed wetland near the State Highway 29 and 36 roundabout would soon be transformed from what currently resembles a trench into a densely planted water filtration system.

In a social media post, NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi said the wetland is a key component of its Tauriko Enabling Works, a wider project aimed at supporting growth and improving transport connections in the area.

Once complete, the wetland would function like a natural system, filtering stormwater runoff from surrounding urban areas by trapping sediment and other pollutants before they enter waterways.

Workers are expected to plant the site in stages, with landscaping and fencing also planned, NZTA said.

The wetland is one of three created as part of the enabling works. The others are near Redwood Lane and alongside Tauriko School.

NZTA said further stormwater upgrades were still to come, including the final stage of works that will connect a new stormwater system to the wetland.

That work is expected to require the full closure of the slip lane to the Takitimu Drive Toll Rd for about six weeks, likely beginning in August.

The broader Tauriko Enabling Works project, delivered in partnership with Tauranga City Council, is scheduled for completion in 2027.

The project is designed to improve safety at key intersections, support the development of Tauriko West housing, enable expansion of the Tauriko Business Estate, and strengthen freight and public transport links.
