Planned road closures on Tauranga’s Takitimu Drive network this weekend have been postponed because of poor weather, with the work now rescheduled for the next weekend.

In a statement, the New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi said the “super weekend” of construction, originally set for June 5 to June 8, will instead take place from June 12 to June 15.

All other details around the project remain unchanged.

The closures are part of major works linked to the Takitimu North Link project, where construction is ramping up at the merging of State Highway 2 and SH29/Takitimu Drive.

Temporary full and partial closures are required to safely complete key activities including road widening, pavement construction, barrier installation and layout changes.

Once underway, motorists can expect delays, particularly around SH29 at Tauriko and SH2 near 15th Ave.

Drivers are being urged to allow extra time for journeys, reduce speeds and follow all temporary traffic management in place.

Around SH2 Takitimu Drive, northbound lanes between SH29 and Eleventh Ave will close overnight:

– Friday, June 12: 8pm to 6am

– Saturday, June 13: 7pm to 6am

– Sunday, June 14: 7pm to 4am

A detour will be in place via Cameron Rd and Elizabeth St.

A full weekend closure will also be in place on the SH29 Toll Road northbound, between SH29/SH36 at Tauriko and SH2 at Fifteenth and Eleventh avenues, from 8pm Friday, June 12 through to 4am Monday, June 15.

NZTA said the closures are necessary to keep both workers and road users safe while the major upgrade progresses.
