Spotlight has opened the doors to a new, larger store in Tauriko, marking the relocation of its long-standing Tauranga site and an expansion of its presence in the Bay of Plenty.

The new store, which opened today, replaces the retailer’s Tauranga location established in 2011.

At 3490sqm, the Tauriko site nearly doubles the previous store’s floor space and includes a dedicated Maker Studio, offering customers a space to take part in hands-on creative projects.

Spotlight chief executive Quentin Gracanin said in a media release that the move reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to the region.

“Spotlight has been part of the Tauranga community for 15 years, and the move to our upgraded Tauriko location marks the next stage of that commitment,” he said.

“The relocated store improves the shopping experience and ensures customers continue to have access to the trusted ranges, quality and value Spotlight is known for across home, craft and fabrics.”

Gracanin said the opening comes at a significant time for the business, with Spotlight preparing to celebrate 30 years in New Zealand in the coming weeks.

To mark the launch, locals are being invited to attend the opening day celebrations, with incentives for early arrivals.

Shoppers in line before 8am will have a double chance to win a $1000 shopping spree, and the first 100 customers will receive a free pillow.

Family-friendly entertainment will also be on offer, including live music, a magician, balloon twisting, free coffee and a barbecue.

The Hits Street Team will be onsite with additional activities and giveaways.

Tauranga councillor Rod Taylor welcomed the investment, saying the new store reinforces confidence in the local retail sector.

“It’s wonderful to see Spotlight’s continued commitment to the local retail sector. The new store will provide a quality shopping experience for the community for many years to come,” he said.

The Tauriko opening is one of two new stores launching nationwide on May 13; a second site will open in Botany Downs, Auckland, as the retailer prepares to mark its 30th anniversary in New Zealand next month.
