Contractors across the Bay of Plenty are racing to complete major maintenance and resurfacing work before winter brings wetter, colder conditions.

“Crews began the region‑wide resealing and rebuilding programme in September last year, and a recent run of warm, dry weather has allowed teams to make strong end‑of‑season progress – welcome news for motorists who rely on resilient and reliable state highways through the colder months," NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) said in a statement.

“Warm, dry weather is essential for resurfacing and pavement strengthening, with moisture having a substantial impact on the durability of road surfaces. ”

NZTA said the work completed over summer will help keep highways safe and accessible throughout winter, although some activity may still be affected by rain and changing conditions.

“Motorists are encouraged to check the NZTA Journey Planner for the latest updates before travelling, as roadworks may be postponed or altered at short notice.”

Tauranga & Western Bay of Plenty

Key delays

SH29 Hamilton–Tauranga: Multiple worksites between Hinuera and Tauriko may add up to 20 minutes to travel times.

Work starting this week

SH2 Te Awanui Drive (Tauranga Harbour Bridge): Southbound lanes will undergo resurfacing from 8pm on Friday, March 20 to 6pm on Sunday, March 22, with lane closures, switches and reduced speeds.

SH2 Mirrielees Rd off‑ramp: Closed overnight Thursday, March 26, 8pm–5am. Detour via Chapel St off‑ramp and Marsh St.

SH29 / Ōmanawa Rd intersection: Thursday, March 26, 7pm–6am – stop/go and 30km/h speed limit in place.

SH29 Tauriko (Cambridge Rd intersection): Night works Monday, March 23, for two nights, including a large concrete pour and three‑way stop/go. A temporary traffic shift onto the newly widened northern section is planned for mid‑April, maintaining one lane in each direction.

SH29A Greerton–Pyes Pā: Lane shifts and 30km/h limit March 24–25, 9am–4pm.Shoulder closures on SH29 and SH29A continue for two weeks.

SH2 near Pukehina: Drainage work and tree felling Monday to Friday, 7am–5pm, with periods of stop/stop control on Tuesday.

SH2 Snodgrass Rd–Loop Rd: Night resurfacing March 30 for three nights (8pm–5am), with uneven surfaces in daytime and a 50km/h limit.

Work underway

SH29 Kaimai Range, Ruahihi Bluffs: Stabilisation works continue until late April, with overnight stop/go and 30km/h limit.

SH29 Ōmanawa Bridge: Lane shift, shoulder closures and slip‑lane closure while construction progresses.

SH29 Tauriko Village: Ongoing northern‑side construction with temporary traffic management. Slip lane to Takitimu Drive Toll Road closed Monday to Friday, 9.30am–3.30pm for drainage work.

SH29 Takitimu Drive Toll Rd: 70km/h limit in place during flyover and slip‑lane construction. Traffic shifts are expected next year.

SH2/SH29 Takitimu Drive: Traffic diverted onto temporary northbound lanes until May for the Takitimu North Link project.

SH2/15th Avee: One lane closed near Edgecumbe Rd until mid‑2026 for connection works.

SH33 south of Paengaroa: Daytime resurfacing with stop/go until mid‑April.

SH2 Pahoia/Esdaile intersection: Road widening continues, with intermittent delays.

SH2 Ōmokoroa Roundabout project: Busy construction period with daytime speed restrictions and ongoing night works.

Minden Rd North: Various traffic management set-ups until April during widening and pavement upgrades.
