SH5 Napier-Taupō Rd still closed after crash

Update 5.30pm:  State Highway 5 Napier-Taupō Road remains closed in both directions following a truck crash after 2pm near Te Pōhue.

The highway is closed between Old Taupō Coach and Palmer Roads.

A truck has rolled, blocking both lanes and there is no viable detour.

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi is warning of significant delays and is advising all road users to delay their journeys where possible and avoid the area.

"We will provide a further scheduled update around 8pm," a spokesperson said.

Police were called around 2.15pm following the stock truck rolling over.

Police said one person suffered serious injuries.

"Stock also suffered injuries."

Earlier, 3.28pm: State Highway 5 Napier-Taupō Road is closed following a truck crash.

“A truck has rolled, blocking both lanes and emergency services are en route to the site,” NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi said.

“Emergency services are responding to a stock truck that has rolled on State Highway 5 between Old Taupō Coach and Palmer Roads,” Police said.

“Police were called to the scene around 2.15pm. One person is reported to have suffered serious injuries,” police said.

“There are also injured stock at the scene.”

Hato Hone St John are currently on scene with an ambulance and helicopter.

Police said the road is blocked in both directions and motorists are advised to delay travel and avoid the area.

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi is warning of significant delays and is advising all road users to delay their journeys where possible.

“There is no viable detour. We will provide a further update later this evening. In the meantime, please keep up to date with NZTA’s Journey Planner."
