Totara Street at Mount Maunganui will be reopening one day early, says a Tauranga City Council spokesperson.
"Good news - the Totara Street work has progressed quicker than planned and given the delays from SH29A that we are experiencing, Totara Street will reopen a day early, at 4am, Tuesday, February 13," says a council spokesperson.
"We are very thankful to the community for heeding our calls to allow extra travel time, to use other modes of transport, or avoid travelling through the area today.
"This has allowed traffic to flow relatively well given the disruptions and diversions."
The northbound lane of Totara Street remains closed today, Monday, February 11. A detour is in place along Hewletts Road.
On Sunday, following the closure of SH29A on Saturday, Tauranga City Council urged motorists to avoid all unnecessary travel on Monday and Tuesday, February 12 and 13, and instead work from home, ride share or use alternative transport if they can.

The closure of State Highway 29A between Barkes Corner and Oropi Road Roundabout followed the discovery of a large cavity under the road.
On Sunday evening, NZTA Waka Kotahi made the decision to pull the planned chipsealing of State Highway 2 for Sunday and Monday night because of the major traffic delays that were expected over the following 48 hours due to the Totara Street and SH29A closures.

"We appreciate the community’s ongoing patience until the early reopening [of Totara Street] at 4am, Tuesday, 13 February," says a council spokesperson.
"At this time the eastbound bus lane on Hewletts Road will revert to normal – buses, bikes, and motorbikes only."
Council say road users may feel some minor imperfections on the new section of road until concrete texturising is complete.
The concrete texturising work will take place from 9pm, Friday February 16 through to 6aam, Saturday, February February under a stop-go traffic operation.
