The Zespri AIMS Games continues today with yachting at the Tauranga Yacht & Power Boat Club at Sulphur Point, gymnastics at ARGOS Gymsport and cross country at Waipuna Park.

The yachting  features around 100 competitors aged 11-13 years chasing the wind and prizes each day until Tuesday September 5 in the Tauranga harbour.

Over in Welcome Bay, around 850 runners will be lining up for the cross country at Waipuna Park.

At ARGOS Gymsport in Judea, 500 gymnasts aged 11-13 years will be competing in a range of activities including trampoline, rings, vault, spring floor, beam and bars.

The Zespri AIMS Games Opening Ceremonies on Sunday afternoon and evening will entertain and inspire competitors and get the week-long school sporting championships off to an unforgettable start.

The Zespri AIMS Games opening ceremonies will be held at 3pm and 7pm at Mercury Baypark Arena. The 7pm opening ceremony can be viewed live online here

Historical talk

Lieutenant Colonel Dr Cliff Simons will talk about the battle of Te Ranga at Tauranga Historical Society's monthly meeting at 2pm today.

Cliff is a military historian who specialises in New Zealand's colonial warfare. The Battle of Te Ranga was fought on June 21 1864, seven weeks after the battle of Pukehinahina-Gate Pā. The battle site is on Pyes Pā Road, just south of Aquinas College. Te Ranga had a high casualty toll and brought the wars in Waikato and Tauranga in 1863-64 to an end. Cliff will discuss the lead up to the battle, the way it was fought and the consequences. Entry to the talk at the hall behind the Brain Watkins House Museum is by koha.  The meeting runs from 2pm - 3pm and more information is available here
