It's a perfect sunny autumn day for creating more unforgettable memories for Greerton rugby team members who battled it out across the fields in the 1970s.
Greerton Marist Rugby Club are hosting a special reunion for two winning teams at their club in Oropi Road, Greerton today.
'We've got a 50th reunion for the 1973 championship winning Greerton rugby club,” says Greerton Marist Senior Rugby committee member Nev Eades.
'We're also hosting the 1971 winning team. So we have both teams here.”
The combined reunion has come about today due to Covid making it impossible for the '71 team to meet two years ago.
'They [reunion players] are down at the rugby club today watching Tauranga Sports Premiere play Greerton Marist Premiere at 2.45pm.”
Those who were members of the two '70s teams are mostly locals, still living in the area.
'We've probably got about 10 players from both 1971 and 1973 winning teams plus the coach and their wives coming.
'They'll watch the game then we'll have a special reunion medial to present to them on behalf of the club.
'And the Prem team will walk out and do a salute back to the club in their honour.”
Nev says some of the reunion players have already presented the jerseys for the premiers earlier in the afternoon.
'So that was pretty cool too.”
Today is also Blazer Day, which honours players who have played over 50 games for the premiere team.
'There are about 20 attending today. The Blazer boys will be mingling with the reunion teams so it's tied in nicely.”
The Greerton Marist Rugby Club formed in 1961.
'Back in those days we were just called Greerton Rugby club and then we amalgamated in the 90s and became Greerton Marist Club.”
The day of reunion, mingling, sharing memories and nostalgia will wind on into a live music evening at the clubrooms following the match.
