Tolerance & understanding calls around road works

Contractors are continuing to progess with road works along Cameron Road in Tauranga, and are calling for patience as the work to complete them.

A Tauranga City Council spokesperson says there are significant changes for both drivers and cyclists as a new two-way cycle lane takes shape.

"This is a significant change for both drivers and cyclists, and we all need to play our part to keep each other safe."

The cycleway is being constructed in sections and, as progress is made, more sections will open.

"Drivers need to watch out for cyclists. Remember to look both ways when turning to access your favourite shops and give way to cyclists and pedestrians. Please pay attention to the temporary traffic management signs in place and adhere to the speed limit."

The team has completed the road resurfacing and installation of cycle separators between Elizabeth Street and Wharf Street, with the new cycle lane to be painted green in the next couple of weeks.

The team is also working between Elizabeth Street and Fourth Avenue on the eastern side of Cameron Road, upgrading the stormwater network and footpath.

The temporary traffic management in place will see a southbound left lane closure between Elizabeth Street and 4th Ave.

The 2nd Ave intersection is closed with no access to or from Cameron Road while the team is working on the corner islands and footpath in this section.

Access to 2nd Ave will be maintained through Devonport Road and 1st Ave.

"This work was delayed due to wet weather, and we expect this work to be complete next week, weather dependent," says cuncil.

The stormwater and footpath upgrade work is underway on the western side of Cameron Road, from 2nd Ave to 1st Ave, and will extend to Elizabeth Street in the coming weeks.

Temporary traffic management will be in place with a northbound left lane closure, with no right turn into Cameron Road from 2nd Ave. 1st Ave is left in only.

A detour is in place from 1st Ave (west), along Westbay Lane, to 2nd Ave exiting onto Cameron Road. 2nd Ave, reduced to one lane, will have temporary traffic lights installed to control traffic flow.

The wastewater upgrade is complete between 3rd Ave and 6th Ave.

The wastewater connections across Cameron Road from 5fth Ave, Arundel Street and 4th Ave are underway. This work is being completed as weekend work.

The team is working from 4rth Ave southbound towards 5th Ave. Temporary traffic management will include southbound lane closures on Cameron Road.

Work on the eastern side of Cameron Road, between 6th Ave and 15th Ave, is progressing well.

The team has returned to work between 6th Ave and 7th Ave on the eastern side of Cameron Road, preparing to lay the pavers and install the new bus stop. Temporary traffic management is in place with a southbound left lane closure in this section.

The team continues upgrading the stormwater and streetscape between 11th Ave and 12th Ave, on the eastern side of Cameron Road.

Vehicle traffic is reduced to one lane on the eastern side in the areas where work is taking place.

The team has also started work on the stormwater and streetscape upgrade between 15th Ave and 16th Ave on the eastern side of Cameron Road. Temporary traffic management includes a southbound left lane closure.

The work zone on the western side of Cameron Road was extended from 11th Ave to 10th Ave, as work to upgrade the stormwater system continues.

"We will be extending our traffic management from 10th Ave to 9th Ave from late November. Traffic will be reduced to one lane from ten metres before 14th Ave to 11th Ave, as the team complete the stormwater and streetscape upgrade through this section."

Work is also underway on the mid-block crossing in the centre median outside Tauranga Boys' College (near the Fourteenth Avenue intersection). Temporary traffic management is in place with a southbound right lane closure.

Intersection work:

  • 2nd Ave/ Cameron Road (east): closed while contractors work at this intersection
  • 12th Ave: the centre median is permanently closed to through traffic
  • 14th Ave/Cameron Road (west): closed while we work in this area.

Please note, above works are weather dependent.

Visit the Tauranga City Council website for more information.

If you're coming into the city, make sure you check the current road closures on the Tauranga City Council website, so you can navigate easily through the city centre.

Yes I fully agree, don't complain to the workers, we should all give the praise to the un-elected who have created the destruction of many CBD business.

Maunganui road destruction!

They started working on Maunganui road back in January? It has almost been a year of road works... .what have they done? Couple of roundabouts and a median strip! Disgraceful!

Cyclists be aware.

Cyclists and pedestrians should be aware of motor vehicles and not the other way around! Pedestrians and cyclists have a much larger and less interrupted view of what is around them than the poor old motor vehicle driver. One would think that drivers have eyes on the back of their heads which like everyone else they don't of course. Why do people expect them to is a question that needs to be answered?

'Cyclists and pedestrians should be aware of motor vehicles and not the other way around!' - that's a classic boomer Tauranga comment. The attitude of boomer car driver is Tauranga is just a disgrace.

Responsibility

Having seen the so-called improvements to date, I just wonder just what people were thinking of when they designed some of this stuff. Many of the features appear to me, as a pedestrian, cyclist and driver, to be ones that will only serve to increase the dangers across all three categories. Will there be some accountability when the statistics start to pile up? Or is it all part of TCC's plan to force everyone to go by bus?

And the reward for showing

... You get a result that cost too much, took too long, and was not what anybody really wanted or needed. Seriously, of course, there is no point in taking our frustration out on road working staff; they are just people trying to make a living. The real target of anger should be the inept, insensitive, and unthinking administrators who authorize these unwanted projects that just burn through our money, so a certain close elite can get rich. Cameron Road is a disgrace and there is no need for it. By all means, replace worn out drains and culverts, but it has gone far beyond that, and it was unnecessary. "an_alias" got it right.

Someone needs to get their eyes and knowledge checked. Two round abouts. Plus 3km of water pipes, drainage, and stormwater. Oh had the new roading, planting, sidewalks, bike lanes. I get that Sunlive readers only care about their cars (and walkers and cycle beware it seems).

Great Idea

We are now back to when we had 2 way cycle ways, brilliant idea. Some idiot decided to put cyclists on the road then complained that they were getting hurt................really.

Speed Signage

Posted on 29-11-2022 15:45 | By Yadick

The speed signs are all gobbledygook. You're in what's last posted as a 30kmh zone and then come to a sign that states it's 30kmh up ahead . . . When did it change speed? PLEASE sort out the speed signs. People are tooting n honking, speeding n slowing everywhere and anywhere. Then of course there's the cyclists that are refusing to use the new cycle way (but of course this won't be their fault). I've been overtaken by lycra in 30kmh zones when I was doing 30. Today a cyclist comes down the ROAD on the WRONG side. Bloody idiot. Cyclists need to learn and obey the rules too. NO EXCUSES.
