Tauranga motorists are being asked to take care while driving through several construction sites along Cameron Road.

"Be kind to the Cameron Road Joint Venture construction team as they go about their work," says a Tauranga City Council spokesperson.

"If you need assistance, they are happy to help you find your way through the site.

"The new two-way cycleway is taking shape. This is a significant change for both drivers and cyclists, and we all need to play our part to keep each other safe."

The cycleway is being constructed in sections and, as progress is made, more sections will open. Drivers are cautioned that they need to watch out for cyclists.

"Remember to look both ways when turning to access your favourite shops and give way to cyclists and pedestrians. Please pay attention to the temporary traffic management signs in place and adhere to the speed limit," says a Tauranga City Council spokesperson.

The team has completed the road resurfacing and installation of cycle separators between Elizabeth Street and Wharf Street, with the new cycle lane to be painted green in the next couple of weeks.

The team is also working between Elizabeth Street and 4th Ave on the eastern side of Cameron Road, upgrading the stormwater network and footpath.

The temporary traffic management in place will see a southbound left lane closure between Elizabeth Street and 4th Ave.

The 2nd Ave intersection is closed with no access to or from Cameron Road while the team is working on the corner islands and footpath in this section.

Access to Second Avenue will be maintained through Devonport Road and 1st Ave.

"We expect this work to take up to one week - weather dependent."

The stormwater and footpath upgrade work is underway on the western side of Cameron Road, from 2nd Ave to 1st Ave and will extend to Elizabeth Street in the coming weeks.

See below to see what other regions are affected:

Temporary traffic management will be in place with a northbound left lane closure, with no right turn into Cameron Road from 2nd Ave.

1st Ave is left in only.

A detour is in place from 1st Ave (west), along Westbay Lane, to 2nd Ave exiting onto Cameron Road.

2nd Ave, reduced to one lane, will have temporary traffic lights installed to control traffic flow.

The wastewater upgrade is complete between 3rd Ave and 6th Ave.

The permanent reinstatement of the wastewater lateral connected to St Mary Immaculate Catholic Church, 114 Elizabeth Street, is complete.

The wastewater connections down 5th Ave, Arundel Street and 4th Ave will start in the coming weeks.

This work will be completed as weekend work.

The team will start at 4th Ave and work southbound towards 5th Ave.

Temporary traffic management will be in place.

Work on the eastern side of Cameron Road, between 6th Ave and 15th Ave, is progressing well.

The team has returned to work between 6th Ave and 7th Ave on the eastern side of Cameron Road preparing to lay the pavers and install the new bus stop.

Temporary traffic management is in place with a southbound left lane closure in this section.

The team continues upgrading the stormwater and streetscape between 11th Ave and 12th Ave, on the eastern side of Cameron Road.

Vehicle traffic is reduced to one lane on the eastern side in the areas where work is taking place.

The team has also started work on the stormwater and streetscape upgrade between 15th Ave and 16th Ave on the eastern side of Cameron Road.

Temporary traffic management includes a southbound left lane closure.

The work zone on the western side of Cameron Road was extended from 11th Ave to 10th Ave, as work to upgrade the stormwater system continues.

Traffic will be reduced to one lane from ten metres before 14th Avenue to 11th Ave, as the team complete the stormwater and streetscape upgrade through this section.

Work is also underway on the mid-block crossing in the centre median outside Tauranga Boys' College (near the 14th Ave intersection). Temporary traffic management is in place with a southbound right lane closure.

Intersection work:

2nd Ave/ Cameron Road (east): closed while we work at this intersection 12th Ave: the centre median is permanently closed to through traffic 14th Avenue/Cameron Road (west): closed while we work in this area.

Please note, above works are weather dependent. Visit Tauranga City Council website for more information. If you're coming into the city, make sure you check the current road closures on the Tauranga City Council website, so you can navigate easily through the city centre.

No kidding

Council planning at its best. What possessed the Council to take out so many strips of Cameron Road for such a prolonged period? Did it start as an evening drinks idea? Certainly seems that way. No way will any of this lot be completed by Christmas. The same person must have come up with the idea of just having one turning right way from the expressway up to the 15th Ave lights to turn towards Gate Pa. There will be accidents here. There is a very thin median strip in the middle of that road and the two lanes coming onto the expressway from the lights go flat out. You feel very vulnerable if you are sitting at those lights by that thin median strips. I sat through four changes of lights a few days ago.

Speed limit?

The instruction to adhere to the speed limit is hilarious - there's not much chance of anyone speeding through the work area unless it's 2:00 in the morning!

Who was it?

I’m quite interested to see the face or faces of the people who have thought up this plan to make Cameron Road into a cycle lane first, nightmare for vehicle drivers and people wanting to shop at all of the existing businesses, side streets included As a long time resident I well remember seeing bikes versus car accidents even when the bike lane was part of the wide footpath Please SunLive could you do a story of how, who, why, this new setup was worked out and passed by whoever as a good idea

Car sized

The last time i saw the cycle way (yes i actively avoid the area, cbd included... poor buseness owners that are left) it was very car sized... like just big enough to drive down to avoid traffic ques.... but im sure council thought of that... didnt they? At least they are now attracting cyclists away from the most dangerous areas instead encouraging them to play with trucks on sulfur point and totara st because all cyclists only use cycle lanes....
