Witnesses to a car fire in Tauranga overnight are reporting seeing an 'orange glow” under the vehicle before it burst into flames.

Emergency services were called to the fire near the Cambridge Road off-ramp at 7.35pm.

'The car had pulled over - it sounds like it might have been mechanical,” says a police spokesperson.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says she was driving past when she saw an orange glow coming from under the vehicle.

'I quickly put my hazard lights on to warn other motorists.”

Another SunLive reader, who wishes to remain anonymous, says they were first on the scene and called the fire department.

'We drove past and noticed a small flame under the car. The driver was still inside.

'We pulled over and hubby and son ran down yelling ‘get out of the car'.”

A report from police says the fire was extinguished around 8.25pm.

There seem to be more car fires reported and also seem to not be really old ones either. Interestingly hybrids vehicles top fire stats then fuel and last full electric. Hybrids and full electric are much more difficult to put out it seems and also more difficult to dispose of having to be contained and disposed of. Seems batteries become much more of a problem that has yet not been solved. Imagine a future when batteries become like car tyres with huge dumps , but if course tyres so much easier but not solved either
