A woman is seriously injured after being hit by a vehicle in the car park of a Mt Maunganui shopping centre.

Police were called to the crash just after 8am in the Bayfair Shopping Centre car park, says a spokesman.

The woman had serious injuries and was taken to Tauranga Hospital in an ambulance, a St John spokesperson says.

Bayfair Shopping Centre manager Steve Ellingford says his thoughts are with the person involved in the incident.

'The safety of our customers, retailers, staff and visitors is our number one priority.”

He says police and emergency services arrived immediately, and the person was taken to hospital.
