Council calls for innovating streets feedback

Tauranga City Council is encouraging the community to share their thoughts on temporary changes to street layouts in The Mount.

Together with a Community Design Group, council has developed several options that could be tested on highly used routes in the north area of Mount Maunganui.

Council says the main aim of the project is to create 'streets for people” by making the streets safer and more enjoyable for people of all ages and abilities, whether they travel on foot, in a car, or on a bike.

Community feedback for the project ‘Innovating Streets at The Mount' can be shared here and closes on Sunday November 29 at 11 pm.

Printed forms are available at the Mount Maunganui Beachside Holiday Park, Mount Maunganui Library, Mount Hot Pools and Baywave.

Council says once the feedback from this second round of public engagement has been analysed, a fourth workshop with the Community Design Group will be held to help determine which trial designs to recommend to the acting mayor and councillors in February 2021.

Why make Mount streets safer and more enjoyable?

Council says a population growth of 43 per cent is expected in Tauranga between 2018-2048 and the popularity of The Mount as a destination is ever-increasing.

'That is why we need to explore new ways of doing things to accommodate more people and to make the area more attractive for all users including those on foot, bikes and other modes of transport.

'This would not only prevent more congestion and air pollution but is also good for our health and the environment.”

Wishful thinking

To believe that council or the road planners of tauranga are going to listen?/ I have an igloo to sell this summer. The planners ONLY CARE ABOUT BIKES and Walkers. They love giving us false hope that they may listen to what they have already planned.

Leopards never change their spots.

It will be a wet day in hell before they take any notice. They just never do and have a long history now of behaving that way. Leopards never change their spots.

Now here's an idea

why don't we have feedback on innovating council staff to stick to their job description, instead of wasting our money dreaming up ways to justify their over paid seat in the back room? Hand up who thought up this latest 'idea'? No, I didn't think so. The broom needs to sweep a good many of the staff behind the councillors. Shouldn't even give this air right now, more important things are on the table.Like the proposed plan changes to the Tga City Plan, dated 10 November, received 23 November. Who delayed posting that?

No Common Sense

I agree with what everyone has to say. Just look at Oceanbeach Road now with all the safety pedestrian islands at every beach accesses there is now hardly any on street parking so where are all these people visiting the beach going to park let alone those that live there. With the infill in housing parking on properties is very restricted and when now turning into your property by these pedestrian island you now run the risk of being rear ended. The only other option is to park on the footpath????? I reckon every second island needs to be removed. Just check on the beach side towards Omanu there is one park between two islands.

Better tell them anyway

Best to really get as much feedback as possible otherwise you too will have a Greerton style waste of time and money project that made traffic worse not better. Got a letter yesterday from council written on 10 November about changes that come into legal force on 16 November ! Nine days ago! Offering to book meetings to discuss and answer questions on something they arbitrarily decided anyway . I don't believe we have any say at all and nor were the changes appropriate. So now they want me to arrange a meeting and go to a venue between 3 & 6 pm so they can explain what they have done ! Angry as !

Sorry but it sounds by this article that TCC don't read your awesome paper otherwise they would categorically know the feedback already. Don't worry Sunlive, we love you and support you :-)

Safety?

Is this the same council that has unleashed lime scooters on the footpaths in the Mount?

@ Bob Landy Which demonstrates how incongruent the council is. Also demonstrates they are obviously using safety as an excuse when it suits them and their already pre-decided upon projexts. I have a feeling that councilors voting for these projects love the idea of cycling/busses but hardly ever actually do it/use them. If ever. Just love the idea of cycling everywhere.

No
