Two people have been charged with breaching the lockdown rules following a rescue on Moturiki Island last Wednesday.

Emergency services were called to Moturiki Island, near Mount Main Beach, around 6pm on Wednesday after reports that a person had been injured falling onto the rocks near a blowhole.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand staff member was hospitalised after sustaining injuries during the rescue.

Moturiki Island is closed to the public while alert level 4 restrictions are in place.

A police spokesperson says two people have been charged with breaching the restriction rules under the Health Act 1956.

They are due to appear in Tauranga District Court at a later date.

'We are still operating under Alert Level 4 restrictions right now - so people should be staying home.

'We are asking people to stay local, apply common sense and not do anything that could risk injury or require search and rescue services,” says the spokesperson.

There have been 177 breaches of the Health Act and Civil Defence Emergency Act in the Police Bay of Plenty District as of 8:30am this morning, says the spokesperson.

Of this number there have been 163 breaches of the Health Act and 14 breaches of the CDEM Act.

Throw the book at them and name and shame these morons. A stint in prison for a month will give them time to reflect on their idiotic decisions and actions.

Good to hear

It was a very irresponsible thing to do and they deserve to get a jail sentence, having put others lives at risk. Idiots actually who probably still do not see the consequence of their actions and danger to others.

make the punishment hurt
