Bridges: youngest Executive member

Tauranga MP Simon Bridges is confident he will be able to manage his new appointments as he is sworn in as minister outside of cabinet today.

In a minor cabinet re-shuffle Simon is now the Consumer Affairs Minister and Associate Minister of Transport and Associate Minister of Climate Change after being sworn in by Governor General Sir Jerry Mataparae in Wellington at 11am.

Simon, who has recently become a father for the first time, says he is ready to step up to the challenge.

'They are quite an eclectic mix, there is not necessarily a common theme amongst them but I think I can bring a unique approach.”

Simon was at home in Mount Maunganui with his wife Natalie and new baby boy Emlyn when he received the call from Prime Minister John Key on Sunday evening.

'It is really exciting, and a great honour. I really appreciate that the Prime Minister has put his faith in me.”

At 35-years-old Simon will be the youngest member of the Executive.

He says his youth, and the fact he has a young family, will help him bring a fresh approach to the portfolios.

'The Consumer Affairs portfolio does deal with things like product safety, including child car seats, those sorts of things do affect families.

'Consumer Affairs is where I take the lead as minister, and in some ways that will make it one of the biggest challenges.

'Although in saying that Climate Change is one of the most challenging areas of Government. It is going to take a lot of work to master that area.”

Already Simon has been fielding questions from Tauranga residents with one member of the public writing to him to ask about the price of airfares between Tauranga and Auckland.

'I have asked my staff to look into it.

'I think as a Minister I will in fact have more ability to effect policies, and will still be working for the Tauranga public.”

Dividing his time between his home in Tauranga and his duties in Wellington will be tough, but Simon says he still intends to spend as much time as possible in Tauranga.

Simon takes over from Napier MP Chris Tremain who is now Minister of Internal Affairs following the resignation of former cabinet minister Nick Smith.

Amy Adams is now Minister of Environment, while Tim Groser is the new Minister for Climate Change.
