A serious crash has closed State Highway 27 near Patetonga this afternoon.

The NZTA is reporting the crash to be at the intersection of SH27 and Maukoro Landing Road.

'Expect delays and follow the direction of emergency services.

'A further update will be provided when more information is available.”

"Police are at the scene of a serious crash at the intersection of SH27 and Maukoro Landing Road," a police spokesperson says.

"Emergency services were alerted to the two-vehicle crash at 12.05pm.

"Initial reports state there are several patients with moderate to serious injuries.

"SH27 is closed between Maungataraata and Tahuna and diversions are in place.

"Motorists are advised to avoid the area."
