Update 7.10pm:

NZTA report that due to a serious crash, the State Highway 34 near Kawerau is now closed between Onepu Spring Rd and Tarawera Rd.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use an alternate route.

The detour is via SH30. Follow the directions of emergency services.

Earlier, 6pm:

A two-vehicle crash has been reported near Kawerau late this afternoon.

Police were notified of the collision on SH34 about 5.30pm.

"It initially appeared to be a serious crash but updated information suggest one person has moderate injuries, another minor," says a Police spokesperson.

NZTA report that traffic delays are possible and motorists are advised to follow the directions of emergency services in the area.
