Tauranga road open after serious crash

Welcome Bay Road is open this morning following a serious crash.

Police officers were forced to close down a section of the road, between James Cook Drive and Waitaha Road, just after 7pm.

A police spokesperson says police were called to a report of a crash at 7.08pm on Welcome Bay Road involving car v cyclist.

"One person has sustained serious injuries."

Cordons were put in place as the serious crash unit investigated the scene.

It's understood cordons were lifted sometime after 10pm.

Police are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash.
