A summer of events for the dogs

Alfie, the spokesdog for Western Bay of Plenty District Council

There are two days of events just for the dogs, coming up next weekend.

The Te Puna Quarry Dog Walk will be held next Saturday, followed by the Mud Dog Run at the TECT All Terrain Park on Sunday.

On Saturday November 23, it doesn't matter whether you're a Husky, Labrador, Border Collie, Malamute or a Chihuahua. Alfie, the Western Bay District Council's official spokesdog and his owner Betty Hall say the Wander Dog Walk being held in the Te Puna Quarry is for you.

The social dog walk event at the quarry is the first of many family friendly events being organised as part of the Western Bay of Plenty District Council's Wonder Dogs Summer Series.

The quarry walk event kicks off at 10am in the Quarry Park carpark at 108 Te Puna Quarry Rd, Te Puna. Dog owners are reminded to bring water, hat and sunblock in case it gets hot and sunny.

The Mud Dog Run, originally planned for earlier in November, was postponed until Sunday November 24 and will feature short runs of 2.5kms at 11am and 1pm, and a long run of approximately 6kms also at 11am and 1pm.

Alfie, the Western Bay of Plenty District Council's Jack Russell, came to the council as a stray in 2015, and lives with Betty, the council's animal service officer, accompanying her to council dog events.

Alfie and Betty will be heading to other social dog walks and events across the Western Bay with a series of runs and walks planned from November to April 2020.

Locations for doggy days out include Puketoki Reserve in Whakamarama, Anzac Bay at Waihi Beach, Waipuna Park in Welcome Bay, and Te Ara Kahikatea Walkway at the Jubilee Park in Te Puke.

There will also be a ‘Dogs in Togs' event at the Te Puke Memorial Pool on Saturday April 11, 2020.

So grab your leashes, pull along your owners and come and join Alfie for some summer fun.

If you are interested in joining Alfie on some of the other walks around our district - see the council's Wander Dogs Summer Series Flyer.
